During her panel at BravoCon in October, Mama Joyce took fan questions and one of them inquired about who she would replace Todd with if given the chance. Her response, “someone with a decent job!” elicited laughter from the audience. It was evident from her expression that she recognized she had crossed a line, but she continued to play to the crowd, relishing the attention.
On the same day, during a BravoCon edition of Watch What Happens Live!, Andy Cohen asked Mama Joyce to say three positive things about Todd. Her responses included, “He’s still short,” “he shaved his beard some,” and “he’s really nice to his kids.” Kandi, who was seated next to her, promptly commented, “we could have done without the first two.” Mama Joyce attempted to mitigate the situation by mentioning that her relationship with Todd was “much better.”
This is not the first instance of Mama Joyce making controversial comments about her son-in-law. She has persistently accused him of being an opportunist and even claimed that Todd had an affair with Kandi’s friend Carmon, allegations that both Carmon and Todd vehemently denied. Fans of Kandi Burruss suspect that her mother’s underlying concern with Todd is the possibility that he might encourage Kandi to establish boundaries with her mother, a dynamic that hasn’t been well-defined in the past. She expressed, “I never kind of got the hang of what do you do in the mama situation because, you know, I was raised like your mama is your mama. You can’t cut your mama off.” While she believes she’s established “some” boundaries, it’s evident that there is still much work to be done within the family.
Kandi says Mama Joyce has a ton of siblings, and she fears if she ever calls her out they will gang up on her.
