Saweetie has experienced various transformations since her breakthrough in the mainstream music scene. The “Icy” rapper is unafraid to experiment with her looks to match the theme of her songs, music videos, or performances. However, there was one significant hair transformation she underwent for personal reasons, which led her to cut off all her hair last year.
Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper made her debut in the music industry in 2017 with her single “Icy Girl.” The song quickly propelled her to success on social media, and she continued to release hits that kept her in the spotlight. Hailing from Sacramento, Saweetie won over fans with her beauty, vibrant personality, and energetic performances. She is known for her talent in reinterpreting songs, making them uniquely her own, such as her takes on Khia’s “My Neck My Back” and Petey Pablo’s “Freak-a-Leek.” Additionally, Saweetie comes from a famous family, with Gabrielle Union as her cousin and her grandfather being former San Francisco 49ers football player Will Harper.
In September 2018, Saweetie began dating fellow rapper Quavo. Their relationship, much like that of Cardi B and Offset, elevated both their statuses and made them a sought-after presence on red carpets. They initially connected on social media, with Quavo later sharing the direct message he sent to catch her attention: “You so icy, ima glacier boy.” Saweetie’s response was, “Was hannin then.”
Their relationship lasted nearly two years until they announced their breakup. The details surrounding their split have remained somewhat unclear, but Saweetie strongly hinted at infidelity on Quavo’s part. She tweeted, “Presents don’t band-aid scars, and the love isn’t real when the intimacy is given to other women.” Quavo responded with his own speculations, and matters took a turn for the worse after an elevator video surfaced. Both parties claimed ignorance about the video’s source, asserting that it was over a year old. However, some fans believed Saweetie leaked the video to tarnish Quavo’s reputation.
When Migos member Offset left the group, Quavo released a song that seemed to suggest Saweetie had been involved with his group member. Saweetie chose to remain silent for several months and eventually addressed the situation in her music. Unfortunately, her song about their breakup coincided with the passing of TakeOff. Despite fan requests to delay the release, Saweetie and her team launched the single and its accompanying EP, which debuted with disappointing sales of just 2,000 units in its first week.
During her darkest moments, Saweetie turned to meditation for solace. It was during this time that she felt the need to cut her hair as a way to release the negative energy. In an interview with Power 106’s Bryhana, she explained, “I wanted to start over, and I did research about hair, and hair holds a lot of energy. And I really wanted to just feel new and fresh with this new music. I won’t say new me. But elevated me. I really just wanted to start over again.”
Although Saweetie has not released new music since last fall, she recently expressed an interest in Lil Nas X as a potential romantic interest, embodying the notion of a fresh start and new energy in her life.
