Popular YouTube blogger Tasha K has sparked a wave of reactions among fans after making claims that Ashanti is going to great lengths to prove her worthiness for marriage following her rekindled relationship with Nelly.
Ashanti and Nelly had an on-and-off relationship spanning over a decade in the early 2000s, which officially ended in 2013. However, they recently revived their romance in early 2023 and made it public in September. Fans have been treated to numerous photos and videos showcasing the couple’s apparent happiness and love. Nevertheless, Tasha K criticized their public displays of affection on social media and their extravagant gifts to each other, deeming it excessive.
In a November 6 episode of her web series “Unwine With Tasha K,” Tasha K expressed her thoughts, stating, “You’re doing too much out here, Shanti, with the face on the purse, the three birthday parties.” She went on to bring up a previous statement from Nelly about their first relationship, suggesting that Ashanti had pushed hard to make it work, but Nelly had not initially wanted the relationship.
When Nelly confirmed their reconciliation in September, Ashanti appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards holding a clutch with a photo of them from the 2003 awards ceremony where they first met. She also shared on her Instagram Story that they exchanged phone numbers that same day, twenty years ago.
Ashanti celebrated Nelly’s 49th birthday by throwing him a karaoke-themed party in Atlanta, followed by a G.I. Moe-themed party, during which she gifted him his dream car. In return, Nelly had previously gifted her a diamond-encrusted necklace and bracelet for her 43rd birthday. However, Tasha K pointed to the absence of an engagement ring as a potential issue.
Tasha K remarked, “Everything is solidified. Why not make it official? It’s because he doesn’t want to marry you.” She expressed her desire for Ashanti’s happiness but doubted that Nelly would propose.
She also made comments regarding Ashanti’s appearance and desirability, stating, “How are you lightskin? How are you absolutely gorgeous?.. Nobody’s out here putting babies in you.” Tasha K expressed concerns that Ashanti might find herself in a similar situation as before when Nelly had not initially wanted the relationship.
Tasha K’s comments generated a strong reaction on social media. Many individuals criticized her for trying to undermine the couple’s happiness. Some urged Ashanti to enjoy her relationship without outside pressure.
Tasha K’s statement about “light-skinned women” also drew criticism, with some questioning the relevance of skin color in discussions about relationships and marriage.
In her initial comments about the couple’s rekindled romance, Tasha K had even suggested that Ashanti should consider having a child with Nelly, as he already has two adult children from a previous relationship but has never been married.
