R. Kelly Files Appeal, Lawyer Claims Too Much Evidence Was Allowed That Hurt His Ability To Receive Fair Trial

The R&B artist remains incarcerated for the foreseeable future but is convinced that crucial evidence, which could potentially exonerate him, has been omitted in his multiple legal trials. R. Kelly and his legal team are actively pursuing yet another appeal in his New York case, asserting that the government failed to provide sufficient proof of his guilt.

R. Kelly had been convicted in 2019 on nine federal charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. His legal team maintains that some of the jurors who found him guilty had preconceived notions about Kelly prior to the trial. They argue that at least two of the jurors had watched the “Surviving R. Kelly” documentary and should not have been allowed to participate in the trial.

R. Kelly’s defense team asserts that the women who accused him of assault were all of legal age, and any alleged grooming did not occur before they turned 18. They also contend that certain aspects of Kelly’s personal life, such as details about his sexual history, sexually transmitted diseases, and preferences, should not have been used against him in court. They believe that the inclusion of this information had an undue influence on the jury’s decision.

R. Kelly has consistently maintained his innocence since his initial incarceration. He and his team appear steadfast in their belief that his interactions with various young women, who sought to leverage their relationships with him to advance their careers, were not in violation of the law. This includes his relationship with R&B singer Aaliyah, whom he married when she was only 15 years old.

Regarding the Chicago case, it remains unclear whether they plan to appeal that verdict as well.
