Though some say work and play don’t mix, these costars would have to disagree. From attending weddings to being named a godparent, these costars have taken their onscreen relationships home with them and have forged tight-knit bonds with the actors they’ve worked with.
From The Avengers reunion at Chris Evans’ recent nuptials to Mindy Kaling naming Office castmate B.J. Novak as godfather to both of her children, here are some of the closest costars in the business.
‘The Avengers’
When Chris Evans married Alba Baptista on Sept. 9, 2023, his Avengers were sure to be in attendance. Robert Downey Jr. was spotted grabbing dinner with Scarlett Johansson and husband Colin Jost in nearby Cambridge following the Cape Cod nuptials, and fellow on-screen superheroes Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner were also spotted in the area over the wedding weekend.
‘Game of Thrones’
Though Game of Thrones ended in 2019, the friendships made on set have lasted beyond the final shot. Pals Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke reunited in 2021 to celebrate the series’ co-creator David Benioff’s birthday, and shared sweet shots from the get-together on social media.
“MOON OF MY LIFE. you are wonderful love u forever @emilia_clarke #smilelyeyes,” wrote along his post while the actress captioned hers: “When your sun and stars rolls into town you check that he can still bench press a Khaleesi. #💪🏻 #😘,”
Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams also shared a close bond off-set, getting matching tattoos commemorating the day they were both cast on the show. Williams even served as Turner’s maid of honor in her 2019 wedding to Joe Jonas.
And for some of the series’ costars, their bond went even beyond friendship — into marriage! After playing love interests on the series, Kit Harington and Rose Leslie tied the knot in 2018 with costars Turner, Williams, Clarke and Peter Dinklage in attendance.
‘Friends’
The one where they’re still friends. Since Friends went off the air nearly 20 years ago, the six main castmates have remained in each other’s lives. Their bond is so close that when Courteney Cox welcomed her daughter, Coco, she named Jennifer Aniston her godmother.
“Jennifer has the biggest heart,” Cox told PEOPLE, “and there could be no better godmother.“
When Cox was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, her Friends “sisters” Aniston and Lisa Kudrow were there to celebrate.
Over the years, the guys have also gotten in on the reunion fun, with Cox sharing a selfie alongside her TV husband, Matthew Perry, as the two stepped out for a lunch date in 2019. That same year, Aniston broke Instagram after sharing her very first post on the platform: a selfie with all five of her former costars.
And of course, all six actors, including David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc, reunited in an official capacity in 2021 for Friends: The Reunion on HBO.
‘Boy Meets World’
Since the series first aired three decades ago, many cast members from Boy Meets World have stayed in each other’s lives, appearing together on podcasts, at fan conventions and for special life events. In 2019, Ben Savage met Danielle Fishel’s new baby and he and Will Friedle also attended her 2018 wedding. Fishel now hosts a rewatch podcast, Pod Meets World, with former costars Friedle and Rider Strong.
In 2023, to celebrate William Daniels 96th birthday, Fishel, Friedle and Strong all met up with the beloved actor for dinner ahead of their appearance at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo 2023.
In 2014, some of the cast reunited onscreen as well for a reboot of the show called Girl Meets World, which starred Savage and Fishel as Cory and Topanga as adults for three seasons.
In June 2023, though, Fishel, Strong and Friedle shared that they have not heard from Savage in three years, though are not sure why.
“I don’t think this is the end of our story — but time will tell,” Fishel said of the strained relationship.
‘Modern Family’
The cast of Modern Family has proven to be a very supportive bunch. Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Julie Bowen, Nolan Gould and Ariel Winter were all in attendance for Sarah Hyland‘s 2022 nuptials after the show wrapped in 2020. Bowen was also on deck to support her onscreen brother in 2023 when Ferguson starred in the Take Me Out revival on Broadway.
“My soul and heart needed this reunion with @itsjuliebowen. Thank you for coming to @takemeoutbway! I ❤️you Julie,” Ferguson wrote on Instagram alongside a smiling selfie.
And speaking of Ferguson, he and his onscreen daughter, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, have enjoyed some quality time together since the series wrapped, seeing shows together in L.A.
“Father daughter date night! This time @jamiemusical @ctgla,” Ferguson wrote alongside a photo of the pair in January 2022, a month after they caught a different show at the same theater.
‘Black Panther’
Letitia Wright has described her bond with Black Panther stars Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira as a “sisterhood.”
“Our connectivity is really unshakeable,” Wright told PEOPLE. “We can sense how each other feel, and that’s just a testament of the years that we were placed together and the experiences that we’ve gone through, especially with losing our brother, it just added another layer of connectivity for us. I feel like in many ways it’s allowed us to see how it’s important to cherish one another and not to take time for granted.”
The three starred together in the original film alongside Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer at age 43 in 2020. The surviving cast reunited for the 2022 sequel, which helped give the close group an outlet to grieve the star.
“Coming back to Wakanda was kind of that delayed moment of a community that lost him, coming back together,” Nyong’o said. “And so I was relieved personally that I didn’t have to pretend that I wasn’t going through grief and I could bring my grief to work and put it to good use. “
‘The Office’
The relationships made on the set of the beloved comedy, The Office, sure have stood the test of time. Cast members have reunited numerous times over the years — even virtually during the pandemic. Angela Kinsey shared a very relatable facetime selfie in March 2020 which showed she and her former castmate, Creed Bratton, chatting over video.
“Facetiming with my neighbor this morning. ❤️ @creedbratton is staying home and safe. He says he’s working on an album while he self isolates. I love this fella so much! ❤️,” she wrote.
Just a few months prior, Kinsey hosted Bratton and Jenna Fischer for Christmas. Fischer and Bratton also host a rewatch podcast called Office Ladies.
And, of course, besties B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling met while filming the comedy nearly 20 years ago and dated for some time before calling it quits in 2007. Despite the breakup, the two are as close as ever and Novak is the godfather to both of Kaling’s chldren.
‘Full House’
They loved their first time on TV so much, they did it again!
The stars of the ’90s favorite Full House — including John Stamos, Lori Loughlin, Jodie Sweetin, Andrea Barber, Candace Cameron Bure, Bob Saget and Dave Coulier — never stopped supporting each other after their series ended, and reunited in 2016 for the revival, Fuller House, minus costars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
Celebrating weddings, babies and other milestones together, the stars also leaned on each other when Saget died suddenly in early 2022.
“We pull together as a family during moments like this,” Coulier told PEOPLE later that year. “We’ve pretty much experienced everything that a real family can experience. Getting picked up, getting canceled, marriages, divorces, births, deaths. I mean, it’s pretty much what every family goes through. And we’ve stuck together through all of it.”
He continued, “It’s incredible to have a group of people in our lives like this, where we know we’re going to get that instant support system. It’s pretty special.”
