It’s been a rocky year indeed for Whoopi Goldberg on The View. The legendary actress and talk show host is never known to back down from a confrontation. When she has an opinion, Goldberg is going to speak her mind. But recent comments made on The View now have Whoopi Goldberg in the hot seat, no pun intended.
On the January 31st episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg stated that the Holocaust “isn’t about race.” The Nobody’s Fool actress’s comments came when the roundtable of co-hosts was in the midst of discussing a Tennessee County’s school district decided to ban a graphic novel for “objectionable content.” The book Maus, by Art Spiegelman, gives a detailed and vivid account of a Polish Jew that is also a Holocaust survivor.
During the conversation, Goldberg was insistent that the event was more involving “two groups of White people.” The other co-hosts offered rebuttals that the Holocaust was indeed driven by racism. However, the actress expressed that it was not about “racism,” but instead about “how people treat one another.” Whoopi Goldberg experienced massive backlash on and off social media following the episode. Hearing the cries everyone made, Goldberg took to social media to admit her wrong admitting she should have said it is about both. The comedian’s apology included a statement from Jonathan Greenblatt, who is from the Anti-Defamation League, to help bring clarity.
Goldberg then appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she further discussed her statements. During her appearance, Goldberg explained that the many messages she received from the public helped her realize and “feel differently.” Furthermore, she expressed that she absolutely did not intend to cause such a massive upset. On Tuesday’s episode of The View, Goldberg felt inclined to, yet again, address her previous comments on the Holocaust. However, the actress began the show by admitting she “misspoke” and did not want her statements to be left “unexamined.”
” I understand why, now. And for that, I am deeply, deeply grateful because the information I got was really helpful,” the sometimes singer stated on Tuesday. “And it helped me understand some different things.” Goldberg further expressed her regret and understanding that “words matter,” with hers being of “no exception.”
But Whoopi Goldberg’s “wrong and hurtful comments” caused Kim Godwin, President of ABC News, to suspend her for two weeks. According to a statement obtained by CNN, Godwin states that Goldberg’s suspension is “effective immediately.” And although Godwin acknowledges that the actress and comedian has been profusely apologetic, she insisted Golberg use the break to “reflect and learn about the impact of her comments.”
This all caps off a few other stressful moments within the last year for Whoopi Goldberg. Just weeks before this suspension, Goldberg was absent from the show after testing positive for covid over the holiday break. In June of 2021, the actress was noticeably absent from her hosting duties due to problems with her health. When she returned, Goldberg revealed that she had been dealing with sciatica, which, as she explained was, “basically a bulging disc in your back [that] impacts the sciatic nerve,” ultimately sending pain down the legs. Complications with sciatica, which she likened to as a “bad boyfriend,” caused her to use a walker. She also labeled the walker her “new best friend” at the time.
In 2019, Goldberg had a massive scare when she had a bout with double pneumonia and sepsis that almost took her life. Many thought that she would not return to the show due to her health, but she briefly came back for a surprise in March of that year for an explanation.
Also, in 2021, Goldberg was the victim of body shaming at the hands of Shark Tank‘s Barbara Corcoran. Due to her tasteless joke, Corcoran faced immediate backlash on social media, causing her to issue an apology for making the joke “at Whoopi’s expense.”Goldberg’s stint on The View began in 2007. However, in 2016, rumors began to swirl that she would not return. Speculations exceeded when she appeared on The Wendy Williams Show to share that she would perhaps not be returning for the next season. However, that decision has apparently changed. Deadline recently reported that Goldberg renewed her contract to host The View through season 28 of the show.
