Transgender Woman Wins Miss Netherlands Pageant For First Time — And Has A Sh’o’t At Miss Universe

For the first time ever, a transgender woman has won Miss Netherlands, opening the door for a historic run at Miss Universe.

When Rikkie Valerie Kolle, 22, was announced as the winner on Sunday to the tune of Sia’s “Unstoppable,” she covered her mouth with her hands in a state of disbelief.“I DID IT !!!!! 👑❤️,” Kolle wrote on Instagram of her “educational and beautiful journey.”

“I’m so proud and happy I can’t even describe it. Making my community proud and showing it can be done,” the newly crowned beauty queen wrote.

Kolle had nervously held hands with the runner-up throughout the long wait to announce the winner while donning a red gown and her hair up in a bun.Kolle immediately covered her face in disbelief after learning she had won, hugged the runner-up, and then accepted the Miss Netherlands sash from Texan R’Bonney Gabriel, the reigning Miss Universe.

The other finalists, who were seated at the back of the stage, exchanged glances, some of which included an embarrassing grimace.

The “beautiful” trans contestant’s triumph was also welcomed on the Miss Netherlands’ official Instagram page.“This finalist shined throughout the show and has also made the greatest progress along the way,” the pageant wrote of the judge’s decision.

“She has an iron-strong story with a clear mission. The jury is convinced that the organization will enjoy working with this young woman.”Kolle will now compete in Miss Universe, which is now run by Thai transwoman Anne Jakrajutatipa, thanks to the victory.

“Let’s get @missuniverse ready. So excited!!!” Kolle said in a happy social media post that was flooded with angry comments that she had surpassed a biological woman for the position.Kolle won’t be the first trans woman to win Miss Universe, though; that distinction went to Angela Ponce, the former Miss Spain who finished outside the top 20 in 2018.

The first transgender contestants were accepted in 2012 when the pageant was still run by now-ex-President Donald Trump, who also enabled the reinstatement of a Canadian contestant who had been disqualified for not being a “naturally born female.”Trump has not yet commented on the Miss Netherlands contestant.

On his Truth Social Sunday, he has, however, entered another sensitive topic related to LGTBQ+ rights writing: “I WILL NOT LET MEN PARTICIPATE IN WOMEN’S SPORTS!”The statement ignited further discussions and debates concerning transgender inclusion and fairness in sports.
