Forest Hill, Texas police are investigating the double murders of a popular local rapper and his 5-year-old daughter at a car wash on Monday.
The child had just turned 5 the day before she was killed.
The man is identified as aspiring rapper Ronnie “Lil Ronnie” Smith, of Fort Worth.
He was also known as “Fame Hood Lil Ronnie” and “Chuckie Smith.”
Forest Hill police say Smith, 30, was vacuuming his car at Slappy’s Express car wash on Forest Hill Drive when 2 gunmen approached the car from the passenger side and opened fire.
Surveillance video from the car wash shows Smith, wearing a red track suit, fleeing the scene.
Smith, who is 5-ft-4, was unable to jump over a wooden fence that borders the property. He tried to return to the car, but the gunmen spotted him and chased him behind a dumpster where he was shot multiple times.
Smith staggered toward a car wash stall where he collapsed and died not far from where his daughter lay dead.
A woman who lives near the car wash told a reporter she heard gunshots and called 911.
“I heard six — one, two, three, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop — then about a few seconds later, I heard another six,” she said.
“I wish they hadn’t put that car wash right there because, yeah, it’s just been like issues upon issues. Mainly with traffic getting out of my neighborhood,” another neighbor complained.
Forest Hill PD said the victim’s car was riddled with bullet holes.
Forest Hill has counted 4 murders so far this year. Last year there were none.
The news of Smith’s murder spread on social media and fans reacted with outrage.
One fan wrote, “Rip babygirl wish your daddy made better decisions.”
Surveillance video of the shooting went viral on Monday night.
Police confirmed at least one suspect is identified and an arrest warrant for capital murder of a child has been issued.
“Currently, we are not ready to release the suspect’s name as the investigation continues,” a Forest Hill PD spokesman said in a news release.
However, Smith’s grieving fans named one local rapper as a possible suspect.
“Tell ’em laugh now,” the aspiring rapper mocked the victim in a post on Instagram. He also shared a video of himself stuck in traffic near the crime scene.
“Who tf got Forest Hill all blocked off? I’m tryna get a car wash,” he captioned the video.
