The National Football League apologized to New Orleans native Lil Wayne after Jay-Z picked California rapper Kendrick Lamar to perform during halftime at Super Bowl 59.
The NFL “immediately” sent a letter of apology to Lil Wayne after the “Lollipop” rapper was denied the chance to represent his hometown during the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
Despite the NFL’s apology, Wayne said he would not attend this year’s Super Bowl after the snub.

Kendrick’s performance was heavily criticized and it was dubbed “the worst halftime show ever.”
Drake sued the pint-sized rapper and their record label UMG after Kendrick called him a pedophile in the song. Kendrick took the P-word out of his lyrics but he wore an iced out “a” on a chain around his neck. The “a” is for “A minor” – one of the lyrics in his diss song.
Skip Bayless, who is good friends with Lil Wayne, chastised the NFL for bowing to pressure from Jay-Z rather than picking a more universal halftime performer.
“The NFL immediately sent Wayne a letter of apology,” Skip said. Skip added that the letter was signed by “nobody in particular, just from the league on NFL letterhead.”
Skip noted that picking Wayne to perform was a no-brainer because the rapper is already part of the NFL’s TV talk shows.
“I mean, he makes weekly appearances on the NFL’s Sunday pregame show, ‘NFL GameDay Morning’ on the NFL Network. But he will not…watch a second of Sunday’s halftime show.”
Jay-Z has been in charge of the Super Bowl halftime performances since 2019. He is known for hating on rappers when choosing the halftime performer.
Atlanta music producer Jermaine Dupri finally admitted that Jay-Z finessed him out of the Super Bowl job. That job was originally pitched to JD, but Jay-Z urged him not to take it. Then Jay-Z took the job and the rest is history.
Jay-Z’s halftime picks are considered the worst in Super Bowl history.
