When Ricky’s Martin’s career first blew up, he was in the closet but the singer says it was his father who finally convinced him to come out of the closet.
Speaking to Andy Cohen, Martin says his team told him that coming out would finish his career.
His father did not feel the same way.
“He said, ‘What are you gonna [do], teach your kids to lie? You gotta be open. You gotta go out… I want to help you. How can we do this?’” Martin explained. “And I’m like, ‘All right, Dad, I’m working on it. Gimme a second. I don’t know how. I don’t know if it’s through an interview. I don’t know if I want to write a letter and tweet it. I don’t know. Gimme a break. It’ll come.’”
Martin finally came out in 2010. “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am,” he wrote on his website at the time.
Fans were shocked but it did not end his career.
