Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert are getting divorced after a seven-year marriage, and the artist has secretly moved to end it early this year.
Taylor also detailed the moment when Shumpert signed a $40 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2015, and he was annoyed by her fame and jealous of her acting career, along with being insecure about being her man. The New York Knicks also paid him $8 million that same year. Within that time period is when he sent her negative text messages by using manipulative and condescending language in response to her fame and also picked fights with her for no reason then apologize.
The divorce was filed in Georgia, and Taylor feels that her ex-husband was treating her in cruel manners by “displaying extreme narcissistic behavior throughout the majority of their marriage.” To save her marriage, she intentionally dimmed her own light as Shumpert became more angry about her celebrity status.
Taylor also turned down recording opportunities and acting gigs because he didn’t want her to work, but complained when she stopped working after giving birth to one of their daughters. She fought to keep the family together and used her connections in Hollywood to help Shumpert get gigs as his career in the NBA started dwindling down but he continued to be argumentative, leading her to begin the divorce process in 2021.
Although she filed for divorce last year, her legal team told her to withdraw the paperwork a day later. However, she filed in January because she couldn’t deal with the “emotional rollercoaster.” The documents also stated Shumpert has been in multiple cheating scandals and his DUI arrests, which included him crashing her Rolls Royce and fleeing the scene.
She said Shumpert wanted them to get back together but became inconsistent and became part of another cheating scandal, which was embarrassing and humiliating for her. Iman has left the family home in October and hasn’t spent time with their children since then.
Taylor is seeking temporary and permanent physical custody, plus joint legal custody and child support. Although she wanted to keep the divorce a secret, Shumpert recently filed in the proceedings, which included their full names.
