Anthony Perry, a Chicago resident, unexpectedly became a hero and changed the trajectory of his professional career one day in June 2022. He was on his way to meet his grandfather to view a car he was interested in purchasing when a physical altercation erupted at Chicago’s 69th Street train station. This altercation led to two men falling onto the train tracks, and one of them landed on the third rail, which carries 600 volts of electricity to power the city’s L trains.
Despite the dangerous situation, Perry refused to let the man lie on the tracks and decided to help him. He carefully descended onto the train tracks, assuming that all the rails were powered up and could electrocute him. He was shocked twice when he initially grabbed the victim’s hand to get him off the rail but persevered. He successfully picked the man up and placed him by the concrete barricade, saving his life.
An onlooker dressed in scrubs instructed Perry to perform chest compressions, which he did until the man’s body started twitching again. When paramedics and firefighters arrived, Perry moved out of the way so they could continue their work.
After the incident, the local evening news reported a mysterious man had saved the day, and a local philanthropist honored Perry’s quick actions with a car. The Chicago Fire Department also reached out to him, and he is currently training to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Perry credits his belief in God and faith as the reason he wasn’t scared to lend a helping hand in this life-threatening situation, saying, “Faith over fear.”
