Rodney Smith Jr. and Terrence Stroy, the founders of “Raising Men Lawn Care Service,” are on a mission to spread kindness and compassion by providing free lawn-mowing services. Their most recent act of kindness involved coming to the aid of an elderly woman who could not afford to pay her neighbor for lawn care due to mounting medical bills and medication costs.
Upon learning about the woman’s predicament, Rodney and Terrence offered to mow her lawn for free for the rest of her life. They now visit her every two weeks to ensure her lawn is well-maintained and to demonstrate their care and support.
“Raising Men Lawn Care” was established with the goal of assisting disabled individuals, single mothers, veterans, and the elderly in need. Rodney was inspired to start the organization when he observed an elderly man struggling to mow his lawn and realized he could make a difference. He initially set a goal of mowing 40 lawns for free and swiftly achieved it.
In 2015, Rodney initiated the “50 Yard Challenge,” which encourages children and teenagers across the country to mow 50 lawns for those in need. To participate, they must post a photo online holding a sign that reads “I accept the 50 Yard Challenge” and then get to work. Upon reaching milestones of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 lawns, participants receive colored shirts. Upon reaching 50 lawns, they are rewarded with a brand new lawnmower, and Rodney and his team travel to assist them in mowing lawns.
In addition to helping those in need with their lawns, “Raising Men Lawn Care” aims to inspire youth by instilling the values of kindness and service to others. Rodney’s goal is to motivate more children to venture outdoors and create a positive impact within their communities.
Rodney mows lawns for those in need in all 50 states and relies on his followers to inform him of people who require assistance. On average, he mows three to four lawns per city, sometimes more.
