Ananda Lewis, well-known for her work as an MTV VJ and television host, recently made a powerful comeback following a surprising health scare. She shared that she had been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in October 2020 and had been battling the disease for nearly two years at that time, despite doctors initially giving her a prognosis of only two to three years to live.
Ananda Lewis, a Los Angeles native, began her career as a television host and personality after appearing in Shai’s music video for “Baby I’m Yours.” She started with BET’s Teen Summit and later joined MTV as a VJ. Lewis became renowned for her ability to conduct compelling interviews, which influenced MTV to provide more opportunities for their VJs to engage in live television.
In 1999, MTV stated that Ananda Lewis had played a pivotal role in reshaping their approach to talent, moving beyond simply having attractive individuals reading cue cards. She became one of the network’s leading faces, hosting shows such as Total Request Live and The Hot Zone, until TRL began to fade out. Lewis even had her own talk show, “The Ananda Lewis Show,” similar to Oprah Winfrey’s, but it was unfortunately overshadowed by the events of September 11, 2001, and eventually canceled after one season.
Ananda Lewis resurfaced in 2019 as part of TLC’s “While You Were Out.” She later shared her breast cancer diagnosis with the public, shedding light on her health struggles and determination to survive. Her story was an inspiration for many, including TV host Tamron Hall, who praised Lewis for breaking barriers with her nationally syndicated talk show and commended her numerous NAACP Awards, highlighting her resilience for herself and her 11 godchildren.
