Many in the singer community are saddened over singer Willie Spence’s recent unfortunate passing. Unfortunately, nothing could have prepared his family and fans for the terrible news that the singer was no longer among us due to a fatal automobile collision on October 11th. His passing sent shockwaves throughout social media, rocking celebrities like K. Michelle, who gave a touching tribute on her social media where she referred to him as her baby and one of her favorite fans.
According to CNN, Willie Spence was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, before relocating with his family to Georgia when he was a child. Later in his life, he became a viral sensation when a clip of him singing a rendition of Rihanna’s hit single “Diamonds” circulated the Internet. He would become a favorite on Season 19 of American Idol, where he advanced to the top 2 and became the runner-up that year. Willie Spence was gearing up to headline his first-ever London show on November 12th. However, on October 11th, after uploading what would sadly be his final social media post of him singing, Spence met up in an unfortunate car accident.
K. Michelle gave a heartbreaking tribute on her Instagram to whom she labeled one of her “favorite rebels.” She shared they were recently in contact over her most recent single. The two appeared to share a close bond throughout the years, as was apparent in the video clip she shared. “I was so happy that the world got to experience that amazing gift you have,” said K. Michelle. She concluded that news of his death “hurts really bad!” and continued questioning God for His decision.
Following the many touching tributes on social media, the family of Willie Spence spoke out in the form of a press conference. They shared memories of their beloved family member and expressed their utter pain for their loss. In addition, the family shared that they were setting up a GoFundMe with a goal of $50K to help offset costs. However, although they have amassed almost $7K, the GoFundMe account states they are “no longer accepting donations.”
Will Spence’s family remembers him as a gentle. “Willie was our gentle giant. He had such a soft demeanor but a very, very powerful voice,” Spence’s cousin Sabrena Cooper said during a press conference at his grandmother’s home in Florida. American Idol also released a statement sharing how devastated they were to hear about the American Idol alumni’s passing.
