A 6-year-old Texas boy named Jeremy is in critical care after he was reportedly attacked in his home by his next-door neighbor.
In a statement shared by the Williamson County Texas Sheriff’s Office, the reported assault was considered to be “a random act.” They added that “the public is no longer in danger.”
At approximately 5:00 a.m. on Sept. 11, deputies from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance in progress at a home located on Rock Mill Loop in Georgetown, the Facebook statement said.
The Facebook post went on to identify Daniel Logan, who the sheriff’s office said had unlawfully entered his neighbor’s home and beat the child with a baseball bat.
“Through investigation, detectives determined that Logan forced entry into a home armed with a baseball bat and assaulted two individuals including a six-year-old child,” the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook post said. “Both victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment.”
The 39-year-old is charged with two first-degree felonies: injury to a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a family member. According to local Austin news station Fox-7, Logan also allegedly struck his 65-year-old mother, Cynthia Logan, with the bat.
Online court records show that a mental health assessment was ordered for Logan on Sept. 12.
His attorney, Marc Chavez, told PEOPLE in a statement, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the young boy as well as his family during this trying time. While the allegations sound troubling, we ask everyone to reserve judgment until all the facts come to light especially while we investigate issues related to serious mental illness. Until that time comes, we will continue to hope for the best of [recovery] for the young boy.”
A GoFundMe page created by Laila Dabbakeh and the child’s father, Arturo Diaz, asked for Teravista community members to help where they could for Jeremy — whether it be a monetary donation or volunteering in some capacity.
The fundraiser noted that the boy was “currently fighting for his life after a horrifying attack that left him in critical condition. But together, we can be the ray of hope that he so desperately needs.”
Jeremy is described as “a bright, vibrant child with a heart full of dreams and a future brimming with potential.”
Due to the reported unprovoked attack in his home, the little boy has now been left “with severe injuries and a long, uncertain road to recovery,” the GoFundMe post read.

The GoFundMe organizers asked the community to help them reach a goal of $250,000 in donations to help cover the cost of his medical expenses. An update posted to the site said that while Jeremy remains in critical care, “he continues to show movement in all his limbs and is responding.”
“When a child is subjected to such a vicious attack while peacefully sleeping in the safety of their own bed within their own home, words can hardly suffice to convey the depth of this tragedy,” a GoFundMe update on Monday said.
Logan’s wife reportedly told detectives that she woke up to loud banging noises on the morning of the incident, per USA Today.
After being unable to locate her husband, she walked outside and saw a hole in the fence between her home and the neighbors’. In the affidavit, she said she observed shattered glass near the neighbor’s back patio door before reportedly hearing Jeremy’s mother screaming.
According to the affidavit, Logan’s mother was reportedly covered in blood and “frantically screamed that Daniel was killing everyone inside.”
