Mo’Nique is on a comeback trail decades in the making with her upcoming Netflix Special. The Oscar winner saw her career quietly snuffed out following a falling out with film producers Lee Daniels and Tyler Perry. Mo’Nique has been a hard pill to swallow for many since she finds her way into a lot of controversies and has said some pretty troubling things over the years. Despite it all, she is ready to return to the big stage and is gearing up to record her standup special for Netflix years after suing the streaming giant for discrimination.
Mo’Nique was a struggling comic for years before scoring her big break on UPN’s The Parkers. After becoming a household name through the show, Mo’Nique began her foray into Hollywood, scoring several noteworthy roles before landing the role of a lifetime in Precious. The film would go on to make her an Oscar winner and push her into the a-list territory. Unfortunately, her win came at a price. Mo’Nique claims that the small budget used to make the film was not enough to cover travel expenses to promote it. She opted to stay home with her family instead of doing the press run and was punished by Lee Daniels, Tyler Perry, and Oprah Winfrey despite the movie still earning an Oscar.
Mo’Nique’s outspoken nature over the years and insistence on involving her husband in all matters of her business made it even easier for people to put distance between themselves and the actress. Eventually, the term blackballed was introduced, and Mo’s spotlight continued to fade. In 2018, things seemed to be back on the up for Mo’Nique after it was revealed that she was offered a standup special by Netflix. Unfortunately, this too would sour after Mo’Nique revealed she was offered only $500k for her Netflix special as opposed to the millions offered to men like Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock.
White female comedian Amy Schumer also made substantially more than Mo’Nique despite not having an Oscar to her name. Mo’Nique took the company to court, and it appears they quietly settled at the top of this year. Unfortunately, the win was briefly overshadowed by a nasty back and forth with DL Hughley that started to make people question if Mo’Nique was truly the problem after all.
Eager to prove people wrong, Mo’Nique mounted a campaign to clear up her public image and scored a major win earlier this year when she reunited with friend Lee Daniels on stage. The two hugged it out and put their past behind them, with Daniels promising to develop several projects with Mo’Nique in the coming months, including The Deliverance, which is currently in post-production. She posted a photo from the set of her and Lee Daniels holding hands and laughing. “WE BACK!!!! I LOVE US 4REAL. IT’S A WRAP FOR ME ON THE DELIVERANCE.”
One fan commented on the post, saying, “I love this. Talk about disagreement, communication, and forgiveness. The cycle. LOVE ❤️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.” Starz producer and music mogul 50 Cent also threw his support behind Mo’Nique and promised her a role in his series BMF. She’s already appeared in two episodes as Goldie.
The icing on top of it all was the announcement that Netflix not only settled their lawsuit with Mo’Nique out of court but that they were pushing forward with her comedy special. Mo took to IG to announce that she would be taping her live special this month and invited fans to join her. “HEY, MY SWEET BABIES! THE LIVE TAPING FOR MY COMEDY SPECIAL “MY NAME IS MO’NIQUE “WILL SHOOT OCTOBER 29TH AT THE RIALTO CENTER IN ATLANTA. GO TO THEREALMOWORLDWIDE.COM TO GET YOUR TICKETS NOW. I LOVE US 4REAL!!” she said in the caption.
Fans could not contain their excitement, with one commenting, “Just got real y’all! The Queen is on the throne, and through this taping, she’s letting the world be part of her Royal Court! God Save The Queen! Love you @therealmoworldwide.” This Netflix special is a major win for Mo’Nique, who would not budge following the initial lowball offer of 500k. She told Sway in 2018, “If I accepted $500,000, what does Tiffany Haddish have coming? If I accept that, what does the Black female comedian have coming? Because what they’ll say is, ‘Mo’Nique accepted this, and she’s got that.’ So what do they have coming?”
