Denzel Washington Admits He Didn’t Cry At His Mother’s Funeral

Denzel Washington talked about missing his mom, Lennis Washington, on a late-night TV show called The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. He said that a mom is a son’s first real love. He mentioned that he didn’t cry at his mom’s funeral, but he might have saved his tears for the show.

Denzel, who got nominated for a big award called the Golden Globes, was feeling thoughtful. His new movie that he directed is called A Journal for Jordan. His mom, Lennis Washington, passed away this year when she was 97 years old.

He told Stephen Colbert, the host of the show, that his mom had a long life and his brother and sister also had enough time with her. Denzel got a bit emotional when he was asked how he keeps his mom’s love alive in his work.

Denzel got teary-eyed and said, “A mom is a son’s first true love. A son, especially their first one, is a mom’s last true love.” He needed a moment to gather his emotions and said sorry to the audience.

He also talked about seeing his son, John David Washington, and his wife together. He realized that what he said about mothers and sons was true. Denzel’s mom was always there for him and his family, but she’s not here anymore.

Denzel was finding it hard to hold back his tears. He even asked for a tissue from Stephen Colbert. Stephen showed a picture of Denzel and his mom at the Oscars in 1990. Denzel still felt really sad about his mom and joked that he didn’t cry at her funeral, but maybe he saved his tears for the TV show.

Stephen mentioned a quote from a smart guy named Sigmund Freud that made Denzel think about whether he was his mom’s favorite child. Denzel laughed and said, “I don’t know if I was her favorite. I can tell you I gave her a hard time!”

Denzel always loved and respected his mom a lot. He promised her before she passed away that he would live in a way that would make her proud of him.

Denzel is turning 67 soon, and he’s really into directing movies now. He likes it because he can help other people. He wants to know if what he does in his life will matter on his last day. He thinks it’s important to ask, “Who have you helped? Who have you made better?”
