Why do you love your favorite movies? For me, it is more about how the actors complexly execute the simplest of concepts. The stars of the shows are often why we love them, often more than the storyline.
Sometimes, we get so used to seeing them in one role that we cannot imagine them in another. The typecasting is not entirely a result of being unable to interpret other roles. Sometimes, the fans love the star that way and want to continue to see them in that light.
But, it happens that after gracing our screens for a long time, some of these stars disappear without a trace. We do not know why they left or where they are.
The truth is simple. The Hollywood scene is ruthless. For artists, it is the survival of the fittest. Even if you are a top-notch entertainer, one small mistake can get you on the Hollywood blacklist.
The promising careers of many famous actors have been cut short because of one wrong move. We compiled a list of 20 favorite stars of the past, which unfortunately made it to that list.
Megan Fox
The Transformers star, although one of the most attractive actresses in Hollywood at the time, was suddenly dropped from the franchise. Not only did she lose that deal, but she also could not seem to get any other job going for herself within the industry.
Well, you know what they say about the bold unbridled tongue; it ends in pain. It happened that in an interview, she had compared the director, Michael Bay, to an evil dictator while on set. She told Wonderland in 2009, “he’s like Napoleon, and he wants to create this insane, infamous mad man reputation. He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is.”
It is widely believed that her disappearance from the scenes was a punishment from him. She was removed from the set of the series and was blacklisted throughout the industry. Some of her colleagues also described her as “difficult” to work with.
How badly some movies she starred in did at the box office made moving forward an uneasy ride for her. Whether the flop was her fault or not, she bared the brunt of most of it.
Elisha Cuthbert
Acting as Jack Bauer’s daughter, Kim Bauer, in the TV show 24, propelled Cuthbert to fame. She could easily have been the next big thing after that, but she disappeared into thin air.
Although she starred as a goofy, runaway bride in the comedy TV Show, Happy Endings, she hasn’t been as prominent since the show wrapped up in 2013. What could have been the reason?
In 2012, Kim Bauer was placed 2nd on Entertainment Weekly‘s 20 Most Annoying TV Characters Ever. Hence, by the time she left the show, fans did not miss her too much. This might have negatively impacted her career.
Secondly, her role in The Girl Next Door, which should have further launched her career, did little help. Even in an era rich with teen comedy hits, the film did not do so well in the box office and received a pretty ‘flat’ reaction from critics.
Subsequently, she starred in movies that either tanked at the box office or received displeasure from critics. The worst for her is likely the horror flick, Captivity.
Tobey Maguire
Tobey Maguire is one of those who got stuck in his role. We all loved him as Spider-Man, but he doesn’t appear as much as we would want him to on our screens.
The reason is pretty simple, with age, he could not continue to play his superhero role. Although he maintained his boyish looks, that body is not of a boy. He could not go back, neither could he move forward because he probably could not move on to more mature roles.
He was also described as being tough to work with. This almost led to his being dropped from the second Spider-Man movie. He also happens to have a reticent personality that likely made it easy to slip the minds of casting agents.
Brendan Fraser
Although Fraser started his career on an impressive note with George of the Jungle and The Mummy Franchise, he suddenly disappeared.
In 2010, he had a series of flops with the movies he featured in. Furry Vengeance and Extraordinary Measures were two massive ones. He also was in and out of the hospital for multiple surgeries for seven years.
Also, in 2018, he claimed that Hollywood had blacklisted him for alleging that a higher-up sexually assaulted him. In an interview with GQ, he alleged that Philip Berk, a former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, had sexually assaulted him. Berk denied the claim in an email to GQ.
Subsequently, Fraser claimed that he was rarely invited to the Golden Globes hosted by the HFPA, and he feels that incident is why.
Fairuza Balk
Fairuza lost some interest in the world of showbiz and chose to take things slow.
She told Dread Central, “I struggled a lot with being pushed too hard in my 20s, with people telling me that I had to keep taking on more and more movies because that’s really only when I’d be relevant. Hollywood is designed that way; it’s always about the new flavor of the moment.”
I guess that describes the entertainment industry as a whole.
Although she can be described as one of those rebellious actresses who adamantly stuck to creative roles, she delivered well on them. Her unique personality and charisma were the reasons we loved her on Return to Oz and The Craft.
She also endured being seen as the “actress who has played edgier, darker roles.” Some of her follow-up films were widely panned and box office blunders. These also affected her stay in Hollywood.
