At the time of the incident, Miguel Nunez maintains that he fully intended to pay for his items. The episode took place during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the long lines and social distancing measures in place led to his decision to leave without paying. He described the situation, saying, “Some little ignorant woman made me stand outside and had a 3,000-person line outside,” referring to the Ralphs store.

He asked if he could leave the items and go fetch his card, but the woman insisted he had to wait in line again. Frustrated, Nunez decided to simply leave with his groceries.
