Shirley Nunn’s death expose failures in care for families

Tragic Deaths of Shirley and Steven Nunn: A Preventable Heartbreak

In 2021, Shirley Nunn, 67, and her son Steven, 50, were found dead in their Middlesbrough home. A new investigation has revealed heartbreaking details surrounding this tragedy — one that experts say could have been prevented.

A Life Devoted to Care

Shirley had been a full-time caregiver for Steven since a tragic accident at age 11 left him in a coma and with severe brain damage. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, Steven faced lifelong learning difficulties, mobility issues, and emotional challenges. Shirley’s dedication was unwavering, especially after the death of her husband, making her Steven’s primary support system, with some assistance from adult social care since 2005.

Terminal Diagnosis

In October 2021, Shirley was diagnosed with stage three lung cancer, which later spread to her brain, spine, and pelvis. Despite her own declining health, she continued to care for Steven at home. Hospital staff arranged palliative care for her at home, respecting her wish to pass away surrounded by familiar surroundings.

Emotional Struggle and System Failures

A Domestic Homicide Review revealed that Shirley was struggling with depression and had thoughts of taking her own life. She reportedly prioritized Steven’s well-being above her own, even as her condition worsened.

Tragically, just two days after being discharged from the hospital, Shirley’s sister found both Shirley and Steven dead — exactly two years after her husband’s death.

The review highlighted systemic failures: professionals did not fully understand the urgency of her psychological needs, focusing more on her physical condition than her emotional vulnerability.

“[Shirley] had cared for and loved her son throughout his life and without question had always prioritized his needs. We can only assume she felt there was no other option or alternative for [Steven’s] ongoing care,” the report stated.

Raising Difficult Questions

This tragedy raises urgent questions about how society supports caregivers facing overwhelming challenges. Could better mental health support, emergency care planning, or earlier interventions have prevented this heartbreaking outcome?

Shirley’s story underscores the need to focus not just on patients’ physical health but also on the mental well-being of those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
