Passionate sportsmanship has recently brought the issue of deep-seated racism in sports to the forefront.
During a game, LSU star Angel Reese faced significant backlash after competitively telling a white opponent, “You can’t see me,” a phrase that had previously been used by that same player against others. ESPN commentator Keith Olbermann retweeted a video clip of the exchange and criticized Reese, calling her “a f****** idiot.” However, this prompted a swift and vigorous defense of Reese.
Shaquille O’Neal was among the first to respond, telling Olbermann to “Shut your dumb a** up [and] leave Angel Reese alone.” Olbermann later clarified that he was unaware that Caitlin Clark, the white player, had also used the same gesture in previous games.
While Reese’s team emerged victorious in the game, further controversy arose when First Lady Jill Biden invited both teams to the White House for a celebration, a departure from the usual protocol. Reese and her team declined the offer, and they received support from sports journalist Stephen A. Smith, who stated, “That’s a bad suggestion. Runner-ups don’t get invited to the White House. Why are we trying to change it now?”
Shannon Sharpe also pointed out the hypocrisy in this situation. He noted that Caitlin Clark was celebrated for her “swag” just 48 hours earlier when she used the “John Cena” hand gesture, but when Reese did something similar, it became a controversial issue. “You stoop so low to call a college kid, a female, a f****** idiot because she did a gesture when you didn’t say anything when Clark did it!” Sharpe lamented during an interview.
