Gabrielle Union is loud and proud as an ally of the LGBTQ community. However, her latest role shows another side that definitely took her outside of her comfort zone and character, for sure. The actress is currently on a promo run for her latest movie, The Inspection, where she plays a mother to a gay man who’s disgusted with his life. But in reality, the actress thinks people that are homophobic are “trash.”
Gabrielle Union has long been an outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ community. For one, she is the stepmother to trans daughter Zaya Wade. The Two Can Play That Game actress often speaks about the joys of raising her daughter alongside her husband, Dwyane Wade. In addition, she continues to raise awareness of LGBTQ issues as well. According to Deadline, Gabrielle Union is gearing up to produce a new television series based on the George M. Johnson book, “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” with Sony Pictures.
The actress is also noted for helping outside of the Hollywood space. In 2020, Gabrielle Union joined with her husband to help provide healthcare services for those in the LGBTQ community who have been marginalized. They partnered with the CAA Foundation for their philanthropic efforts to provide healthcare for five different providers, including the OneWorld Community Health Centers, Inc., and the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
Gabrielle Union has also been outspoken against recent legislation that has stirred up massive controversy. Concerning the “Don’t Say Gay” bill passed in Florida, the actress encouraged everyone to take a firm stance against “hate and oppression.”

However, despite all that she stands for, Gabrielle Union accepted the role of “Inez French,” a mother who has issues with the fact that her son is homosexual. This is all seemingly due to her religious beliefs. For Union, playing the role was challenging in that she couldn’t precisely identify with the character. But, she told PEOPLE her exact thoughts about those that who have an issue with people in the LGBTQIA+ community.
The actress revealed that she views homophobic people as “trash” and won’t take the time to educate them on how to “love their children.” Not when “Google is free,” says Gabrielle Union. Additionally, the actress promised that it is not within her nature to “reject” her child based on their sexuality. “My child, none of my children, are disposable,” she explained.
